The prominent Russian artist Nikolai Zarubin (1948-1998) defined his art as visual representation of his philosophical and ethical outlook on the universe. A bright representative of the national tradition of philosophic art he developed his own unique method.
The artist blends together the visible and invisible, thought and intuition, science and myths, earthly beauty and supreme cosmic order, visual symbols and esoteric knowledge, abstract philosophic notions and artistic expression. Zarubin’s paintings saturated with multilevel implications give an attentive viewer much food for thought. They convey the artist’s insight into the dialectics of existence, the nature of the all-embracing unity, the regularity of cosmic laws, and similar problems.

"I may define my art as a visual representation of philosophical and ethical views of the world.
Rhythm, space and time are the three key elements within our scope.
As an artist, I am interested in the essential aspects of human existence, in relations between objects rather than objects themselves.
Enhanced painting technique evolves from the desire to express the inexpressible.
The fusion of forms inside transparent registers is opposed to destructive forces and pacifies them. Forms may fragment and multiply at a breathtaking speed, condense and explode, thus structuring the painting."

Man displays initiative in exploring the world, layer after layer, but is incapable of keeping or accumulating information. It is woman who imparts a certain quality to it. "Everybody has a star that flares up for them. The Star of Bethlehem appeared at the birth of Christ. A tiny personal star appears for each of us, and we are here to work very hard indeed to fathom the essence of our inner world. We feel as if we were dressed in heavy diving suits. In other words, our feelings are restricted by three-dimensional space. The confined spirit is to find itself. If we go beyond the limits of space and time, the conventionality of thought, we reach our "Supreme self", which exceeds these three components. According to (one's) theorem, any system should be observed from a level above this system. The problem of man can never be solved within the bounds of the human, so it is absolutely necessary to attain a higher level. It seems that our abilities are restricted for the purpose of building up "pre-faith". This initial state should develop into confidence, a positive feeling of trust in oneself, which leads to faith in the Divine."

"Свою живопись я бы назвал визуализацией философско-этических представлений о мироздании.
Ритм, пространство и время - вот три основополагающие вещи, которые постоянно находятся в пределах нашего осмысления.
Меня, как художника, волнуют глубинные вопросы нашего бытия, в живописи, интересуют не столько предметы, сколько связи между предметами.
Расширение представлений о технологии живописи проистекает их желания выразить невыразимое.
Слияние форм внутри прозрачных регистров противопоставляется насилию законов разрушения и вычленения, умиротворяет их разрушительные смыслы. Формы могут максимально дробиться и множиться с головокружительной быстротой, предельно сжимаются или взрываются, организуя пространство картины."
"Полярность мира сего - не что иное, как открытый взгляд на то, что мы различаемся, взаимодействуем в поисках выхода к каким-то гармонизирующим началам. Мужчина познает мир через открытие все новых и новых его пластов, через инициативность. Однако он не может в достаточной мере хранить информацию, накапливать её. Дело женщины - придать этой информации качество. Только при таком сотворчестве и только вдвоём, создавая друг друга по дополнительным качествам, возможен переход на новую, более высокую ступень эволюционного развития."
"У каждого вспыхивает звезда. У Христа вспыхнула Вифлеемская звезда. У каждого из нас вспыхивает личная маленькая звезда, и мы здесь не что иное делаем, как какую-то очень тяжелую работу по нахождению своей внутренней сути. Мы здесь как в тяжелых водолазных костюмах. И поэтому наши чувства ограничены трехмерностью пространства. Для духа здесь определенные ограничения, чтобы он сам себя разыскал. Если мы научимся преодолевать ограниченность пространства, ограниченность времени, косность мысли, то мы выходим на высшее "Я", которое находится за пределами этих трех компонентов. Есть вторая теорема Гёделя, она гласит: систему можно познать только выйдя на высший уровень по отношению к этой системе. Поэтому мы проблему человека никогда не решим, если будем крутиться внутри человеческого. Обязательно надо выходить на более высокий порядок. И мы, быть может, специально здесь ограничены в своих возможностях, чтобы сначала возникло ощущение до-верия. Потом нужна будет вера в себя, положительная вера в себя, которая выведет в веру в высшие начала."
